CMAA Three Rivers Project Achievement Awards

Our Project Achievement Awards recognize outstanding work in the practice of construction management. Honorees are models of professionalism and excellence in Western Pennsylvania and the Greater Pittsburgh region.

In 2026, we honored the City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Works for their Medic Station 4 project!

Medic Station 4 demonstrates innovation through its integration of high-performance design strategies into a critical public-safety facility.

The project applies Passive House principles to reduce energy demand through a super insulated, airtight envelope; limited thermal bridging; triple glazing; and all-electric, high-efficiency HVAC with energy-recovery ventilation. These strategies enabled downsizing of mechanical systems while improving long-term operational efficiency.

The station also advances responder health through a clear red-yellow-green zoning system that separates contaminated and clean spaces, supported by pressure relationships, vehicle-exhaust extraction, radiant floor heating in the apparatus bay, and indoor air monitoring with automated flushing.

The project further contributes through thoughtful material reuse, incorporating salvaged brick, wall tile, metal ceiling panels, and the original stone crest from the previous station. Its compact, single-story layout improves circulation and response efficiency while supporting durability, adaptability, and 24/7 emergency operations.

Accepting the award were Claire Mastroberardino, Lily Hummel, James R. Lennon, AIA, NCARB, and Chris Hornstein, RLA.

Our Awards Committee is composed of construction owners and professional construction managers. They evaluate each nominated project, using the criteria detailed in our nomination form. Submissions are categorized by market sector and construction value, and the best projects in each of those groupings are selected for honors.

We designed our evaluation criteria to coordinate with CMAA's criteria for the national awards program, and our entry deadline is less than two weeks ahead of theirs. So you and your project team can make twice the impact by preparing a nomination and submitting it for consideration under both programs.

To be 2027-eligible, projects must be physically located in Western Pennsylvania or the Greater Pittsburgh region, and they must have a completion date between June 1, 2026, and May 31, 2027. Multiple submissions from any one person or organization are welcome.
